A white backsplash may seem like a safe choice for a kitchen remodel, but it has its disadvantages in terms of aesthetic design and functionality. Its neutrality allows it to pair well with various cabinets and countertops, but its surface can look sterile and cold.

There are other backsplash materials that are more exciting, and Hilary Farr highlights one of them in her show, “Tough Love with Hilary Farr.” In season 1 episode 7, she remodels her clients’ all-white kitchen with a stunning blue glass tile backsplash that runs all the way up the ceiling.

Adding Visual Depth

The tiles add much-needed visual depth to the home’s core and soften the plainness of the surrounding design. Before finishing the job, Farr explained, “I really want to add a bold color to their kitchen somewhere, and that backsplash is the perfect place.”

Rather than using traditional white squares, Farr chose blue glass pieces that become the kitchen’s centerpiece. Their shiny surface catches attention and serves as a visual anchor for the room.

Incorporating Blue Glass Backsplash Tiles

While blue glass tiles can enhance certain kitchens, they may clash in others. Before purchasing, examine your kitchen’s color scheme, settle on an overall palette, and note any existing focal elements that might conflict with the tiles.

The glossy blue surface might draw attention away from prominent light fixtures or countertops with bold veining. In the show, Farr made sure the tiles added a burst of color to an otherwise spare kitchen. “Since we lost the blue in the island cabinets, I made up for it with this lovely blue in the backsplash,” she explained.

The striking blue should create harmony in the design rather than produce a mismatched look. Farr’s tiles frame the range hood, softening the stainless steel’s cold, industrial feel.

Extending the tiles up to the ceiling raises renovation costs, yet it can lend a sense of luxury to the home’s center. The sleek blue hue offers a cool, soothing vibe with a contemporary look.

Warmer backsplash hues may work better if you’d like your space to feel cozier and more inviting. Always make sure to steer clear of colors that interior design experts wouldn’t recommend using in your kitchen. The key is to find a balance that works for your space, and blue glass tiles can be a great option for those looking to add some visual interest to their kitchen.
