When grass clings to a lawn mower’s deck, it triggers two key issues. The buildup disrupts blade movement, forcing the engine to labor more and reducing its operational life. Additionally, trapped moisture accelerates rust formation, further diminishing the mower’s durability over time.
Cleaning grass stuck to a mower is a chore that many people dread, and to make it easier, some individuals spray the deck with WD-40 or cooking oil. However, this is only a temporary fix that needs to be repeated often.
A more effective solution is to give the deck a fresh coat of paint. Various paint products are recommended for this, including enamel, urethane, and alkyd-based coatings, which are available at big box stores.
Paint Products for Mower Decks
For example, RustSeal from KBS Coatings is a moisture-curing urethane that can be brushed or sprayed. Although the manufacturer does not explicitly claim that it repels grass, it does create a hard, slick surface that grass is less likely to stick to.
Another product is Majic Black Matte Non-Stick Mower Spray Paint, an alkyd-based paint that contains graphite, an ingredient in many non-stick spray coatings. The manufacturer claims that it prevents grass from sticking, and it comes in an aerosol can for easy application.
Choosing the Right Paint Product
When choosing a paint product, it is essential to consider the condition of the mower. If the mower is severely rusted, a product like RustSeal would be a good choice, as it prioritizes rust suppression. On the other hand, if the mower is fairly new and in good condition, a paint with a non-stick additive like graphite would be more suitable.
To paint the underside of a lawn mower, one should start by safely removing the blade and taping over the rotor and any other areas that should not be painted. Then, scrape and brush off loose grass, and use a scraper or a drill with a wire wheel to remove any stubborn grass and loose existing paint.
After cleaning the metal, apply an anti-rust agent over existing rust, and let everything dry overnight. Finally, apply the paint by spray or brush, following the product’s instructions, and wait for the recommended amount of time before mowing.
