Crafting a wreath from scrap paper offers a creative way to repurpose materials. Mrs. Clare Hoops demonstrated how to braid paper strips into a rustic DIY wreath, which can be embellished with various decorations. This project not only reduces waste but also allows for personalization, making it a unique addition to your home decor.
Materials and Preparation
The project uses kraft paper, often found in packaging or grocery bags, to achieve an earthy look. Its brown color adds warmth and a natural feel to the wreath. Gather scissors, a rubber band, a stapler, wire, and decorations. Start by cutting and rolling paper strips into thick strands, then braid them together. To begin, stack a few pieces of scrap paper, smooth them out, and cut three piles of strips several inches wide. Roll each pile into a thick strand, secure the ends with a rubber band, and braid using the classic back-and-forth method. Staple the ends to keep the braid intact.
When you near the end of the first braid, roll and staple additional paper strands to extend its length. Shape the braid into a circle and secure it with staples or wire. While not suitable for outdoor use due to its vulnerability to the elements, this wreath adds charm indoors, making it perfect for seasonal displays.
Decorating Your Wreath
Decorate with natural items like pinecones, acorns, twigs, or feathers, or use crafting supplies. For a holiday theme, add artificial pine branches, berries, or ornaments. A bow completes the look. You can also opt for faux decorations, such as the Winlyn Decorating Kit, which includes a variety of fall-themed items. For a neutral aesthetic, glue on buttons, wooden beads, flowers, or greenery. While it may not withstand outdoor conditions, you can enhance its durability indoors by spraying it with Aleene’s Spray Acrylic Sealer for added protection.
This project transforms scrap paper into a unique, rustic decoration, perfect for indoor display.
