The humble car seat gets its due

We spend a significant amount of time sitting in a chair, yet it’s often overlooked as a design object. While we celebrate and admire chairs in other contexts, the office chair remains in the background.

For decades, the office chair has occupied an unusual position in the design world, influencing our health, comfort, and concentration. Despite its importance, it rarely enjoys the same cultural status as other design objects.

The Overlooked Office Chair

At Savo, a study of 10 years of design weeks and five years of editorial coverage revealed that office seating accounted for just 8.1 per cent of exhibitor entries. In contrast, lounge chairs received more than 2.3 times the visibility.

When office seating did appear, it was overwhelmingly framed through function: ergonomics, productivity, adjustability, and performance. These aspects limit the potential of the category.

Good ergonomics support healthier bodies, better work, and improved wellbeing. With 1.71 billion people globally living with musculoskeletal conditions, the importance of a well-designed office chair cannot be overstated.

Rethinking Office Seating

The world around us is changing, with hybrid working blurring the boundaries between home, work, and lifestyle. Employees expect environments that feel inspiring, personal, and human. At the same time, there is a renewed appreciation for sustainability, longevity, repairability, and enduring design.

In the UK alone, about 1.8 million office chairs are discarded every year, highlighting the need for products that people value and keep for longer. Design culture is also shifting, with a focus on spaces that feel lived-in and expressive, rather than sterile perfection.

The objects that surround us are becoming reflections of identity, taste, and values, rather than simply tools. Office seating should be included in this conversation.

Recognizing Office Seating as Design

It’s time to stop seeing office seating as something that belongs in the background. It’s time to recognize it as design, rather than just equipment. The office chair supports us through ideas, conversations, challenges, and achievements, making it one of the most intimate design objects we own.

We spend more time with it than almost any other piece of furniture, so it’s surprising that it’s not given more attention. As we move forward, it’s essential to consider the role of office seating in our daily lives and its potential to impact our wellbeing and productivity.

By rethinking office seating, we can create products that people value and keep for longer, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. It’s time to move office seating from the back seat to the front row and give it the recognition it deserves as a design object, much like a new style can bring life to an old setting.
