How to Keep Trash Bins From Sliding on Slopes - stop trash bins sliding
The interlocking plastic grids create a level surface for the bins.

Uneven driveways often make placing trash bins a challenge, especially when the slope is steep enough for containers to slide downhill. A TikTok user shared a straightforward fix that prevents bins from moving without the need to relocate them to the bottom of the driveway. The solution consists of constructing a solid pad beneath the containers by using interlocking plastic grids that form a stable, level surface.

A modular base for heavy loads

The maker describes these items as interlocking pavers, although they belong to a class of permeable paver systems. They are lightweight and can be arranged on site with minimal effort. Once the first section is anchored, the cells may be filled with gravel, dirt, or even seashells, depending on what is available. In the demonstration, crushed stone created a solid, well-draining foundation that resists movement during freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rains. This approach mirrors the construction of a permeable driveway but is applied on a much smaller scale, making it suitable for residential use.

The installation began with a hole dug to accommodate the new base. The bottom of the excavation was leveled carefully, and a sub-base of crushed stone was spread evenly across the area. A weed barrier was then laid on top of this layer to inhibit plant growth that could disrupt the surface. The grid sections, each covering two square feet and measuring about one inch thick, were assembled like puzzle pieces. After the pieces clicked together, the cells were filled, creating a flat pad that holds the bins firmly in place.

While the demonstration used the TrueGrid brand, other brands can work just as well. TrueGrid paver grids come in a variety of styles, and 1 inch is a typical thickness, so that’s how much space you should leave between the top of the base and ground level. After assembling the grid, which comes in 2-square-foot sections, fill it with the substrate of your choosing, and the pad is complete.
